The Dead Road – research
During three expeditions (2009, 2011, 2013) we have mapped a total of 15 abandoned camps along the so-called Dead Road Railway – Gulag Construction...
Labour camp on the Turukhan River. Used in the construction and maintenance of the railway line.
The Terraska camp is relatively accessible – it is not far from the Turukhan River and is not so overgrown. This facilitates orientation and research into the camp’s remains. Unfortunately most of the buildings have collapsed and it is difficult to ascertain their original purpose. The camp’s comparative accessibility has allowed local hunters to pull the buildings apart for building material and we documented several whose walls had been almost completely dismantled. Just one prison barracks is preserved, though in a state close to collapse. Only latrines (a reconstruction of them is used in the 3D tour) and a relatively small solitary section with three cells have been preserved.
